New flag for Malawi

Posted by dgbmcc on August 16, 2010

New flag of malawiMalawi President Bingu Wa Mutharika has officially unveiled the new flag of Malawi despite criticism from the country’s civil society organizations.

Speaking during the Unveiling Ceremony at the New State House in the capital Lilongwe, President Mutharika said his government will not regret modifying the country’s flag because it signifies the change in development for Malawi.

“We are not necessarily changing the flag as it has been reported by other quarters but we were modifying it to reflect the modern Malawi,” he said.

The Malawi president added that the colors are still the same, red, green and black but the sun rise which was previously half has become a full rising sun…  read full article: http://www.netnewspublisher.com/malawi-president-officially-reveals-new-flag-of-malawi/

Proposed new coal fired power station at Hunterston, North Ayrshire

Posted by dgbmcc on August 14, 2010

The Scottish Government is currently considering a planning application from Ayrshire Energy to build a new coal fired power station at Hunterston in North Ayrshire. The application refers to the installation of ‘carbon capture and storage’ at the plant, but this technology is untried and untested at this scale and is very unlikely to be fitted at the outset.

If it were to go ahead the plant would create carbon dioxide emissions at such a scale as to wipe out any savings we are asking congregations to make, probably many times over. This would make a mockery of the Scottish Government’s Climate Change Act and the challenge we are setting to eco-congregations. Eco-congregations near the development, such as that at Fairlie, are deeply concerned about the proposal.

You can add your voice to the objectors to this proposal by writing to the Scottish Government at Hunterston . The closing date for objections is 20 August 2010.

  • A number of other groups in membership of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland such as Christian Aid, Friends of the Earth Scotland, RSPB and WWF are strongly opposed to the proposal and have details on their websites, including online actions. You can find out more at the links below:

What the milkman taught me about change…

Posted by dgbmcc on August 2, 2010

Some musings… as I look to the future…  our 2020 Vision for Dalgety Parish Church… and the future of the Church of Scotland.

During Autumn 2009 in the midst of the “financial crisis”, a local milkman announced that to keep milk prices competitive he would be reducing delivery costs by delivering milk on three days each week rather than six. Of course this is not a problem when delivering pasteurised milk to fridge owning households. It makes so much sense and could have been making good business sense for years. The “financial crisis” was not itself the cause for change, but rather the catalyst to see the possibility of change. Eli Goldratt, physicist turned business management guru says that embracing change also requires revisiting the rules that upheld the old system. We hold onto bits of the old ways again and again. Several years ago my Rotary Club introduced a system of coloured disks indicating menu choice of meat, fish or salad. Still disks are picked up… and a tick is placed on the sheet – ‘cos that’s the way it’s aye been. And when there is a discrepancy the ticks will be held in higher regard! Our congregational roll is kept on computer, but a decade or so on we don’t quite trust the new technology and so the handwritten card system is maintained in parallel. “People don’t want to be changed, they want to be blessed”, says Stephen Gilligan and oft quoted by Rob Voyle in his promotion of “Appreciative Inquiry” as a way of building on what is positive and life giving rather than dwelling on the problem and trying to fix it. For too long we have phaffed around, joking about resistance to change! How many Presbyterians does it take to change a light bulb? Now is the time for re-vision. Seeing things imageafresh in the light of all that has changed around about.

I love the illustration of the Chaluteca Bridge in Honduras. When hurricane Mitch brought destruction in  1998 and damaged 150 bridges along the Chaluteca River – one stood firm – the Chaluteca Bridge. Intact, it had weathered the storm, yet suffered greater indignity. The river had burst its banks, rerouted and now the bridge stands firm on dry land leading from nowhere to nowhere! Now there’s a metaphor for a Church in the business of bridge building between God and creation.  The “financial crisis” has brought into focus the need for change.  It has created the “sense of urgency” that John Kotter says is the first step and only context towards change. I don’t believe that the Church is engaged in managing decline, but I believe that that’s what many within and outwith the Church think is happening.  This is the time for re-envisioning what God is calling us to be and do, time for re-visiting the old rules some of which hold us in the past, time for re-connecting with communities, time for re-vitalising the Church of the one who came that we might have life in all its fullness.
